Sisu is a Finnish word which has no exact translation in English, but means unflinching determination in the face of overwhelming adversity. The writing in issue four is about visceral persistence, personal struggle, bravery, setback, undaunted determination, of getting bloodied and knocked down and forcing yourself to stand back up anyway. It’s about incomplete victory earned through pain and love, and about how some of us have won recently despite the propaganda that wants us to believe we are destined to lose. It’s about living our lives and fighting for a better world that we might never see, but fighting anyway, because the alternative is spiritual death and an empty life in the service of a system that despises us.
